Know your carpets: Natural fibre v Man-made

Excuse our big-headedness, but we know a thing or two about carpets.

Having been on the scene for many moons, we have seen many updates, improvements and new additions to the carpet market. We understand that, if you are on the hunt for a new carpet, that the options might all be a bit confusing. So, here we look at the main options when it comes to man-made fibre carpets and natural fibre carpets – investigating the benefits and restrictions of each type.

Hopefully, this information will shed a bit more light on which carpet might be best for you and your home interior….

Natural fibre carpets

Wool carpets

If you are looking for a carpet that is natural, sustainable and cosy on your feet, then a wool carpet could be a great option for your home. Although usually on the higher end of the price ladder, wool carpets offer a great investment choice and will give many years of comfort and warmth for you and the family. They could even save you money on your utility bills going forward as they retain heat so much better than synthetic alternatives. They look stunning and are available in a wide variety of shades and patterns. Surprisingly, wool carpets are also very easy to care for – they are easy to clean and have the power to resist dirt naturally.

Sisal carpets

For those homes with an environmentally-friendly conscience, sisal provides a natural, yet tough flooring option. Organic and earthy, sisal is a natural fibre, which is extracted from the leaves of the Agave Sisalana plant. It grows in desert climates such as Mexico, Africa and Brazil. It’s sustainably grown with little or no pesticides – further reducing its impact on the planet. Sisal is also an excellent choice for family members with allergies and its strength means its suitable for high footfall areas such as hallways and stairs. Initially a bit firmer underfoot than other carpet alternatives, sisal will give and soften with time and regular vacuuming.

Man-made fibre carpets

Polypropylene carpets

Soft to touch, but tough when it comes to endurance, polypropylene carpets are a very popular choice because of their fantastic value for money, low-maintenance and long lifespan. Their synthetic fibres handle stains very well and are easy to clean if spillages occur. This makes them suitable for even the most well-used parts of your home and also great for homes with pets and kids. Polypropylene carpets come in a wide variety of styles, with something to suit every room and interior taste.

Polyamide (nylon) carpets

Just like polypropylene, polyamide is a real toughie too. It’s durable and flexible man-made fibres handle stains well and make it easy to clean in a few simple steps. It’s also suitable for high footfall areas as the fibres don’t flatten when stood on – they spring back into shape, keeping your carpet looking fresh and new over time. Modern polyamide carpets come in a wide range of styles, colours and patterns and are generally very cost-effective too.
